March Art Appreciation
Welcome to the March Art Appreciation lesson! March is Women’s History month and the lesson features the Gee’s Bend Quilters of Alabama. The Gee’s Bend Quilters are ancestors of quilters that began the craft in the 1800s. The techniques and knowledge have been passed down from generation to generation. The quilters honor their ancestors and what quilting has done for their families. Quilting began as a way to keep warm – they were functional and a necessary item. While, many of the quilts are still functional and the women make them for their families, the quilts are now considered art. They have become so famous, that they have been sold in department stores and can also be found on Etsy. The prices range anywhere from $800 to $12,000! I apologize for the wordiness of the lesson. Please do not read it straight off the slides. Feel free to adapt the conversation to keep the students' interest and also so that it is easily understood by the grade level you are teaching. The project should be fun! The students will use fabric to design their own quilt squares and create a story about it. The materials are in the media center on the shelves. Unfortunately, we cannot use needles to stitch the fabric together, so they will be gluing the fabric to card stock. I’m not sure if the students’ scissors will cut the fabric, so I have included better scissors in the bags. Please be sure to return all materials to the media center. As always, if you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you! Denise Thank you for volunteering to be a part of the PTA’s Art Appreciation Program at PSE!
The purpose of this program is to introduce the children at PSE to different styles of art. This program is a fun way for you to get into your child’s classroom. Your children are responsive to the works of art and always have interesting viewpoints. The good news is that you need no art experience to lead these discussions; just the willingness to present the information and the ability to facilitate a group discussion and possibly a hands-on activity. The lessons are located on this webpage to the right under the monthly headers. When you are in the classroom, please have your teacher pull the slideshow up on the white board for you. Then you can talk through the slides with the students. Please do not have the students take turns reading the presentation. It tends to take up too much time of the 45 minutes that is allotted. At the end of the presentation, there will typically be an activity. Look for the supplies in the Media Center on the Art Appreciation shelves if there are materials needed other than what is supplied in the classroom. THINGS TO REMEMBER:
Lessons begin in October and end in May. Information provided might include an historical background of the artist or movement, important events that were taking place at that time, thought-provoking questions, suggestions of hands-on activities, video links and books to read or show the class. Then you will do an activity with the children that relates to the movement or the artist. Art Appreciation lessons are designed to fit into a 45-minute time block. As always, please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions or you feel you might need help teaching a lesson. Thanks again for volunteering - hope you have fun and we couldn’t do this without you! Denise Short, [email protected] |
